In his raised right hand he carries a spear, while his left hand holds both an aquila (legionary eagle standard) and a vexillum (military standard), emblems of Roman military power and legionary loyalty. The reverse composition directly references the role of the army in legitimising Vitellius's claim to the principate. The encircling legend CONSENSVS EXERCITVVM proclaims the unanimous support of the armed forces. |
