Reverse description Victory, draped, striding left and affixing a round shield to a trophy composed of arms and armour. Beneath the trophy, a captive enemy sits in a posture of mourning and submission, hands bound. The composition conveys the iconographic theme of Roman military triumph over a conquered foe. The reverse legend, divided across the field, records Vespasian's tribunician power and consular honours.

Additional information

Vespasian's ninth consulship in 79 AD coincided with the final months of his reign — he died in June of that year, making coins bearing COS VIIII among the last struck in his name. The Victory type carried pointed political weight for a dynasty whose legitimacy rested entirely on military success: Vespasian had taken power through civil war in 69 AD, the Year of the Four Emperors, and never stopped reminding Rome of it.

RIC II.1 1068 belongs to the revised second edition of Roman Imperial Coinage, which substantially reorganized Flavian attributions from the original 1926 volume.
