Issued in 74 AD, the year after Vespasian formally closed the Temple of Janus — a ritual declaration of peace performed only a handful of times in Roman history — this PACI ORB TERR AVG type was part of a deliberate propaganda campaign asserting that the Flavian dynasty had restored order to an empire convulsed by the catastrophic civil wars of 69 AD.
