His right foot rests upon the prow of a ship (rostrum), symbolising Roman naval dominance, while he holds a dolphin downward in his right hand and a long trident vertically in his left. The composition alludes to Vespasian's early military campaigns and the importance of sea power to the Flavian dynasty. The reverse legend is disposed in the field to either side of the figure, within a beaded border. |
