Struck in the first two years of Trajan's reign, this issue dates to a moment of deliberate political repositioning after the fraught final years of Domitian. The tribunician and consular dating places it precisely within 98–99 AD, before Trajan had even returned to Rome from the Rhine frontier following his adoption and accession. The Senate had already declared Domitian's memory damned, and early Trajanic coinage carried messaging calibrated to distance the new regime from that condemnation.
RIC II 31 is among the earlier catalogued types in the series, reflecting the output of the Roman mint operating under a physically absent emperor for much of this window.
