| Beschrijving keerzijde | A Dacian captive, dressed in barbarian garb, is depicted seated right in a posture of dejection at the base of a Roman trophy. The trophy, centrally placed and dominating the field, consists of arms and armour arranged upon a post, symbolizing Roman victory over Dacia. The captive's bent figure and downcast attitude powerfully evoke the theme of Roman imperial triumph that pervades Trajanic coinage. The surrounding legend, distributed around the periphery of the coin, dedicates the issue to Trajan as the best of princes. The composition is well-centered and the relief, though somewhat flat on this example, remains clear in its iconographic message. |
