Trajan's OPTIMO PRINCIPI title — "Best of Princes" — was formally conferred by the Senate in 114 AD, but it appears on coinage well before that date, suggesting the honorific was in informal use during the Dacian war years. The S P Q R prefix framing it was a deliberate political construction, presenting the title as a senatorial gift rather than an imperial claim.
RIC II 170 falls within the prolific third emission of Trajan's coinage, a period when the mint output surged to fund the Dacian campaigns and subsequent infrastructure projects, including the construction of Trajan's Column.
