Additional information

Trajan's Parthian campaigns of 114–117 AD represent the farthest eastern expansion Rome ever achieved, briefly annexing Armenia, Mesopotamia, and reaching the Persian Gulf. The PARTHICO in the legend reflects the honorific awarded after the conquest of Parthia — a title no emperor after Trajan would legitimately claim through actual military victory. The coinage from this terminal phase of his reign is compressed into a narrow window; Trajan died in August 117 before returning to Rome, leaving Hadrian to abandon nearly everything his predecessor had taken.

RIC II 370 belongs to the final emission of Trajan's mint, struck under considerable political pressure as the eastern provinces revolted.
