| Obverse description | Laureate draped bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, depicted with characteristic short curled hair and strong facial features typical of his portraiture. The bust is rendered in high relief in the Roman imperial tradition. The obverse legend encircles the bust, reading IMP CAES NER TRAIAN OPTIMO AVG GER DAC, conferring upon him his full imperial titulature including the honorific OPTIMO. The flan is slightly irregular, as is common for hammered silver denarii of this period. |
