Trajan's sixth consulship, held from 112 AD, provided the dating anchor for this issue, but the reverse type tells a more specific story. FORT RED — Fortuna Redux, "Fortune the Returner" — was a title invoked to celebrate a general's safe return from campaign. Its appearance here almost certainly anticipates or commemorates Trajan's return from the Parthian frontier, where he was orchestrating what would become Rome's greatest eastern territorial expansion. The campaign ultimately took Roman armies to the Persian Gulf, the furthest extent of imperial conquest.
