Issued during the preparatory phase of Trajan's first Dacian campaign, this denarius falls within the run-up to full-scale war against Decebalus — a conflict Trajan had been engineering since 99 AD through road construction along the Danube and the reinforcement of frontier garrisons. The COS IIII dating places production firmly in 101–102, coinciding with the first crossing of the Danube via the pontoon bridge at Drobeta.
RIC II 60 is well-attested across hoards from the Danubian provinces, unsurprisingly given the massive military pay requirements of that campaign.
