The encircling Latin legend runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor with his full suite of imperial titles. | Description du revers | Trajan standing right in a triumphal quadriga, holding a branch in his right hand and an eagle-tipped sceptre in his left, riding in a decoratively rendered four-wheeled chariot drawn by four horses advancing left across the field. The scene commemorates a triumphal procession and is executed in fine relief with careful attention to the horses' musculature and the chariot's spoked wheel. The encircling legend in the upper field reads COS V P P S P Q R, with OPTIMO PRINC completing the titulature in the lower field. The reverse type celebrates Trajan's fifth consulship and his acclamation as Optimus Princeps by the Senate and Roman people. |
