This denarius dates to 79 AD, the year Titus assumed sole rule following Vespasian's death in June — the same summer Vesuvius buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in August. The tribunician and consular titles in the obverse legend place production firmly within that compressed, catastrophic year. Titus redirected imperial resources toward disaster relief in Campania, reportedly contributing personal funds, which may have affected the pace and volume of mint output during this period.
RIC II.1 no. 1 is the opening entry of the revised second edition — the first listed coin of Titus as Augustus.
