Titus held the tribunician power for only two years as sole emperor before dying in September 81 AD, almost certainly of fever, though ancient sources including Suetonius record persistent rumors of poison — with his brother Domitian the most frequently named suspect. The TR P IX dating places this issue squarely within his final year of rule, a reign defined by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD and a catastrophic fire in Rome the following year. Titus reportedly emptied the imperial treasury responding to both disasters.
