Titus struck this type during the catastrophic year that opened his reign: the eruption of Vesuvius in August 79 AD buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, and a devastating fire swept Rome shortly after, followed by a plague. The invocation of Bonus Eventus — a deity of favorable outcome tied to agricultural fortune — reads less as celebration than as imperial anxiety management, an attempt to project divine goodwill at a moment when the gods appeared distinctly uninterested in providing it.
