| Obverse description | Laureate head of Emperor Titus facing right, rendered in high relief with naturalistic portraiture characteristic of Flavian imperial coinage. The emperor's features are firmly modelled, with the laurel wreath encircling the head as a symbol of imperial and military authority. Titus struck this type during the catastrophic year that opened his reign: the eruption of Vesuvius in August 79 AD buried Pompeii and Herculaneum, and a devastating fire swept Rome shortly after, followed by a plague. The invocation of Bonus Eventus — a deity of favorable outcome tied to agricultural fortune — reads less as celebration than as imperial anxiety management, an attempt to project divine goodwill at a moment when the gods appeared distinctly uninterested in providing it.
