Obverse description The Pharos (lighthouse) of Messana dominates the field, surmounted by a statue of helmeted Neptune standing right, holding a trident in his raised right hand and a rudder in his left, his left foot resting on a ship's prow. Before the lighthouse, a galley moves left, an aquila (legionary eagle) mounted on its prow and a sceptre tied with a fillet displayed on its stern. The encircling legend reads MAG•PIVS•IMP•ITER, identifying Sextus Pompeius as Magnus Pius, Imperator for the second time. The design is rendered in the bold, high-relief style typical of late Republican military coinage, with a border of dots.
