| Beschrijving keerzijde | A naval trophy mounted upon an anchor occupies the central field, with the tip of a trident projecting above; flanking the trophy base are a prow-stem (rostra) to the left and an aplustre to the right, emblems of naval supremacy. At the base of the composition, the heads of the sea-monsters Scylla and Charybdis are depicted, evoking Sextus Pompeius's command of the Sicilian straits and his mythological pretensions as son of Neptune. The surrounding legend PRÆF•CLAS•ET•ORÆ•MARIT•EX•S•C is rendered with MAR in monogram and the AE characters ligatured, attesting to the careful calligraphic conventions of the die-engraver. The entire design is enclosed within a border of dots. |
