Marcus Sergius Silus issued this coin partly as a monument to his grandfather, the legendary Sergius who fought in the Second Punic War and lost his right hand to wounds sustained in battle — subsequently wearing an iron prosthetic and reportedly returning to combat. The family's claim to this heritage was politically potent in the late Republic, and the moneyer exploited it fully.
