Reverse description The bold legend S P Q R is inscribed in large raised letters within the field, entirely enclosed by a finely rendered civic oak wreath (corona civica) tied at the base with a decorative knot. A small pellet or roundel appears at the apex of the wreath. The oak wreath, a symbol of honour awarded for saving the life of a Roman citizen, here serves as a powerful emblem of senatorial authority and the sovereignty of the Roman people.
