Quintus Lutatius Catulus — not Cerco, despite catalog conventions — commanded the Roman fleet at the Battle of the Aegates Islands in 241 BC, the engagement that ended the First Punic War and forced Carthage to cede Sicily. The moneyer behind this issue, likely a descendant bearing the same gens name, would have traded heavily on that ancestral prestige. The Lutatii Catuli were among the most politically visible families of the middle Republic, and coin issues bearing the name carried explicit genealogical weight in a system where moneyers competed for public recognition.
