Caecilius Metellus, the moneyer responsible for this issue, almost certainly belongs to the same gens that produced the consul of 143 BC who triumphed over the Macedonians — a family aggressively consolidating political capital in Rome through the 130s. The abbreviated die control marks on this type, the Q•M͡ET͡E pairing, represent one of the earlier systematic uses of magistrate abbreviation on Republican silver, a practice that would become standard within a generation.
