Ptolemy of Mauretania was the last ruler of his dynasty — a grandson of Antony and Cleopatra — and his reign ended in 40 AD when Caligula had him executed in Rome, reportedly over a dispute about a purple cloak that outshone the emperor's own. This issue dates to the final years before that execution, making it among the last coins struck under independent Mauretanian authority before the kingdom was absorbed as a Roman province.
The fabric is noticeably small and thin even against other provincial silver of the period, a characteristic consistent across the MAA 122 type.
