(Translation: Imperator Caesar Caius Pescennius Niger Augustus. Supreme commander (Imperator), Caesar, Gaius Pescennius Niger, emperor (Augustus).)
Reverse description Standing figure of Mars facing front, helmeted and in military attire, rendered as a full-length nude or semi-draped deity at the center of the field. Mars holds a spear vertically in one hand and a trophy or parazonium in the other, consistent with the MARTI AVG type as catalogued in RIC IV.1 #51. The two-word legend MARTI AVG is distributed in the field to either side of the figure. The reverse field is relatively flat, as is typical of hammered denarii struck at Antioch during the civil war coinage of 193–194 AD. No exergue line is present.
