| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central reverse type featuring an eagle displayed with wings spread, standing facing, head turned to one side, as catalogued under RIC IV.1 34A for the Antioch mint. The eagle, a quintessential symbol of Roman imperial power and divine favour, occupies the central field of the coin. The surrounding legend INVICTO IMPERAT, meaning 'To the undefeated commander', runs around the periphery of the flan in Latin capitals. The reverse die work is consistent with the Antiochene production style of the reign of Pescennius Niger, showing somewhat coarse but energetic engraving. The overall composition is characteristic of the propaganda coinage issued by Niger to assert legitimacy during his bid for the imperial throne. |
