Obverse description Laureate head of Pescennius Niger facing right, with curled hair rendered in the provincial style characteristic of the Antioch mint. The effigy displays a bearded portrait with slightly idealised features, typical of the eastern workshops during the civil war coinage of AD 193–194. A circular Latin legend surrounds the bust, partially incomplete due to the irregular flan and characteristic weak strike of this usurper's coinage. The portrait conveys imperial authority despite the relatively coarse engraving quality associated with the hasty production of this short-lived claimant's issues.
