Struck in the years bracketing Actium, this issue belongs to the intensive military mint output supporting Octavian's final campaigns against Antony and Cleopatra. The traveling mint — likely operating in or near the western provinces — produced enormous quantities to pay legions that were simultaneously fighting and being demobilized into the veteran colonies Octavian needed to secure Italy politically. The DIVI F title was deliberate propaganda: son of the deified Julius, not merely Caesar's heir by adoption.
By 29 BC, with the triple triumph celebrated and the temple of Janus closed for the first time in generations, this coinage was already giving way to the more stable Augustan issues that followed his constitutional settlement of 27 BC.
