Nerva's second consulship coinage was issued in the frantic opening months of his reign, following Domitian's assassination in September 96 AD. The Senate, which had suffered brutally under Domitian's later years, moved quickly to restore senatorial dignity — Nerva's early emissions were deliberately varied in reverse type, signaling an ideological break from his predecessor's monotonous propaganda output. This particular design cluster belongs to that initial burst of legitimizing coinage.
Nerva was 66 at accession, with no biological heir. The pressure to adopt a successor produced one of Rome's more consequential decisions: Trajan, named co-ruler in 97 AD, just fourteen months before Nerva died.
