Nero's early coinage, struck within the first four years of his reign, reflects the period when Burrus and Seneca still held genuine influence over imperial policy — a phase ancient sources treat as something close to competent government. The tribunician power notation IIII dates this piece precisely to 57–58 AD, before the executions and fiscal pressures that would later debase the silver coinage significantly.
The denarius maintained respectable fineness under Nero until roughly 64 AD, when the great fire and subsequent building program — including the Domus Aurea — forced a reduction in silver content from approximately 90% to around 93 parts per thousand below that standard.
