| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare-headed bust of Nero facing right, rendered in youthful portrait style typical of the early years of his reign. The neck is lightly draped at the truncation. The legend encircles the effigy within the field, distributed around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the characteristic broad facial features and short curly hair associated with early Neronian coinage, consistent with RIC I 12. |

Struck in the third year of Nero's tribunician power, this denarius falls within his earliest coinage — a period when the mint still operated under significant influence from Agrippina the Younger and the Stoic philosopher Seneca, who together shaped imperial policy before Nero consolidated sole authority. Agrippina's own portrait had appeared on coinage just years prior, an unprecedented move that Nero soon suppressed as his relationship with his mother deteriorated toward her murder in 59 AD.
The RIC 12 type is among the earlier issues before the silver content of the denarius began its gradual debasement under Nero's reign.
