Matidia the Elder, niece of Trajan and mother-in-law of Hadrian, died in December 119 AD. Hadrian's public mourning was conspicuous even by imperial standards — he delivered her funeral oration personally and pushed through her deification with unusual speed, minting this consecratio issue almost immediately after her death. The gesture was almost certainly political, reinforcing his dynastic connection to the Trajanic line at a moment when his legitimacy remained contested by senators skeptical of his adoption.
