Issued by the insurgent Italian allies during the Social War, this denarius was struck at Corfinium — the city the rebels briefly renamed Italica and intended as the capital of an independent Italian state. The war itself grew from Rome's repeated refusal to grant citizenship to its Italian allies despite their bearing the same military burdens as Roman citizens. Within a year of this coin's production, the confederation had effectively collapsed, not through military defeat alone but because Rome began offering citizenship to allies who laid down arms — the very concession that had started the war.
