Denarius MARS VLTOR, Genius and Mars

This denarius belongs to one of the most contested twelve months in Roman history — the Year of the Four Emperors — when the death of Nero in June 68 AD triggered a succession crisis that would see Galba, Otho, and Vitellius each claim and lose the principate before Vespasian stabilized the empire in late 69. The invocation of Mars Ultor, the Avenger, carried pointed political weight: the temple and cult had been established by Augustus after Philippi to commemorate vengeance for Caesar's murder, and subsequent claimants reached for the same imagery to legitimize usurpation as righteous restoration.

RIC I #48 is attributed to Galba's mint at Rome, late in his seven-month reign.
