Issued during Antony's tenure as one of the Second Triumvirate, this denarius belongs to a series struck to finance his eastern campaigns and consolidate patronage networks following the Caesarian victory at Philippi in 42 BC. The invocation of Pietas was politically calculated — Antony was actively positioning himself as the rightful heir to Caesar's divine lineage and popular legitimacy, in direct competition with Octavian's identical claims.
RRC 516 encompasses a tightly clustered group of issues from a mobile military mint, likely operating in the Greek east. The series is not rare by Antony's prolific standards, but surviving specimens frequently show the granular surface texture characteristic of hastily refined bullion.
