Struck in 32 BC during Antony's eastern campaign, this denarius belongs to the series issued to celebrate his Armenian conquest of 34 BC and, far more controversially, to legitimize Cleopatra VII and their children as co-rulers over Rome's eastern client kingdoms — the so-called Donations of Alexandria. That public ceremony, in which Antony redistributed Roman-controlled territories to his Egyptian consort and their sons, was the single most damaging political act of his career. Octavian read the will aloud in the Senate and used it as a declaration of war.
The coin was almost certainly struck in a traveling military mint accompanying Antony's forces.
