| Beschrijving keerzijde | A Macedonian shield of the type captured during the Macedonian Wars, shown in three-quarter perspective and richly decorated with a central boss surrounded by concentric dotted and beaded borders, with curved ribs radiating outward — an allusion to the moneyer's ancestor L. Caecilius Metellus, who defeated the Macedonian king Perseus at the Battle of Pydna in 168 BC. Two crossed carnyx (Gallic war trumpets) appear above the shield, and two shields flank it on either side. The moneyer's name M•METELLVS•Q•F (Marcus Metellus, son of Quintus) is inscribed in two lines in the exergue and around the lower field, identifying the issuing magistrate. The composition is bold and heraldic, celebrating the gens Caecilia's military legacy. |
