| Beschrijving keerzijde | Marcellus stands left within the tetrastyle temple of Jupiter Feretrius, in the act of consecrating the spolia opima — the armour of the Gaulish chieftain Viridomarus — upon an altar or trophy. The figure is shown in a gesture of dedication, with the architectural frame of the temple prominently rendered, its columns and pediment clearly delineated. The lengthy legend of Trajan's restitution titles encircles the scene, wrapping around the upper and lower rim in two registers. The composition closely follows the iconography established on the original Republican denarius of Lentulus Marcellinus, faithfully reproduced under Trajan's restoration programme. |
