This denarius was struck in the field during Sulla's march on Rome — not in a fixed mint, but as a military issue to pay legions actively engaged in the civil war against the Marians. Lucius Manlius Torquatus served as proquaestor under Sulla, and his name on the coin reflects the Roman practice of subordinate officers assuming direct financial responsibility for military pay. The traveling mint moved with the army, likely through southern Italy in the critical months before Sulla's decisive victory at the Colline Gate in November 82 BC.
