Additional information

Issued by a moneying college of three magistrates — M. Calidius, Q. Metellus, and Cn. Fulvius — this denarius falls within a period when Rome was managing the political fallout from the Jugurthine succession crisis in Numidia. The Metellus here is almost certainly connected to the gens Caecilia Metella, one of the most politically dominant families of the late Republic, though pinning him to a specific individual in the stemma remains disputed among numismatists. RRC 284/1 is a single-type issue with no documented subvarieties of consequence.
