Clodius Macer declared against Nero in early 68 AD while serving as legate of Legio III Augusta in Africa Proconsularis, effectively cutting off Rome's grain supply from North Africa. He struck his own coinage — an extraordinary act of defiance — in what appears to have been Carthage, invoking the legion directly on the coin rather than styling himself emperor, a calculated ambiguity that may reflect his uncertain political position. Galba had him executed within months of Nero's death, making his entire coinage output the product of perhaps six or seven months of minting.
