Reverse description The reverse presents an elephant advancing to the right in high relief, rendered with careful attention to the animal's wrinkled hide, large ears, and upraised trunk trampling what appears to be a serpent or carnyx (Gallic war trumpet) beneath its feet. The bold, naturalistic portrayal of the elephant is one of the most celebrated compositions in Republican coinage. Below the groundline, the legend CAESAR is inscribed in large, well-spaced Latin capitals. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded border.
