Juba II ruled Mauretania as a client king under Augustus, having been raised and educated in Rome after his father's defeat at Thapsus in 46 BC. His coinage reflects that upbringing — struck at Caesarea to Roman weight standards, issued by a man who was arguably more Roman intellectual than Numidian king. He married Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Antony and Cleopatra, and their court became an unlikely center of Hellenistic scholarship on the North African coast.
MAA 128 places this issue within the early Augustan phase of his reign, before the series diverges into the more experimental types of his later decades.
