Juba I allied with Pompey and the Optimate faction against Caesar, a decision that ended at Thapsus in 46 BC when his forces were routed. Rather than submit to Roman captivity, he arranged a mutual suicide with the Roman commander Marcus Petreius. Numidia was annexed immediately after, making this denarius series one of the last independent coinages struck before the kingdom ceased to exist as a sovereign entity — the mint closed not by reform but by conquest.
