| Reverse description | Jupiter seated left on a throne, his muscular semi-draped figure depicted in a classical style, holding a long scepter or hasta in his left hand and an unidentified object in his right. The throne is rendered with decorative detail, showing a low-backed chair with visible legs. The encircling legend IVPPITER CVSTOS runs around the periphery of the coin, identifying the deity as Jupiter the Guardian. The reverse type alludes to Jupiter's protective role over Rome and was employed as a powerful legitimizing device during the civil war coinage of the Year of the Four Emperors. |
