The portrait is boldly struck in high relief, reflecting the restitutor coinage conventions employed under Trajan. The encircling Latin legend reads C MEMMI C F QVIRINVS, identifying the original moneyer Gaius Memmius, son of Gaius, and the divine epithet Quirinus — the deified name of Romulus. The coin is a Trajanic restitution of a Republican denarius originally issued by the gens Memmia, and the flan shows the characteristic irregular outline of hammered coinage. |
