The reverse type here references the gens Caecilia and its most celebrated member, Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius Scipio — but the precise reason Trajan revived this Republican moneyer attribution on an imperial denarius remains debated. Trajan's coinage frequently invoked Roman ancestral tradition as ideological scaffolding for his expansionist program, particularly during the Dacian war years when legitimacy through Roman history carried obvious propaganda weight.
RIC II 770 is relatively scarce within the Trajanic series.
