Issued in the first months of Hadrian's reign, this coin belongs to a group minted almost immediately after Trajan's death in August 117 — before Hadrian had even returned to Rome. The title PARTH F, claiming Hadrian as Trajan's son, was part of a legitimacy campaign conducted largely by correspondence from the eastern frontier, where the succession remained politically contested. FORT RED, invoking Fortuna Redux — the fortune of safe return — carried pointed meaning: Hadrian was still in Syria when these were struck, and his return to the capital was anything but certain.
