Additional information

Hadrian's Oceanus types belong to a broader programmatic series issued in the early 120s celebrating the personified forces of the natural world — a reflection of Hadrian's deliberate philosophical positioning rather than any specific event. The series coincides with the early years of his extensive provincial tours, begun in 121 AD, during which he personally inspected frontier defenses including the Rhine and upper Danube.

RIC II.3 #522 is part of the revised second edition's substantial reattribution work, which reassigned numerous Hadrianic issues previously catalogued under different tribunician sequences.
