Struck in 117 AD, the year Hadrian assumed power following Trajan's death in Cilicia — a succession that was itself contested, with some ancient sources suggesting Trajan's wife Plotina manipulated or fabricated the dying emperor's adoption of Hadrian. The "Fortuna Redux" type, invoking the goddess of safe return, was a standard issue for a new emperor establishing legitimacy after a journey to Rome from the eastern provinces.
The COS DES II dating places this firmly in Hadrian's earliest months of rule, before his first full consulship took effect.
