| Beschrijving voorzijde | Bare-headed bust of Hadrian facing left, with curly hair rendered in fine wavy strands; the emperor is depicted with his characteristic short beard and strong facial features in the realistic portrait style of the Antonine period. The truncation of the bust is visible at the lower field. | Beschrijving keerzijde | The river god Nilus reclines to the right, his mature, bearded figure resting at ease; he holds a reed stalk in one hand and a cornucopia overflowing with fruits and grain in the other, symbolising the river's life-giving abundance. Beneath the figure, aquatic fauna — including a crocodile and a hippopotamus, emblematic of the Nile — are rendered in the lower field or exergue, accompanied by stylised reeds evoking the Egyptian riverine landscape. The composition belongs to Hadrian's celebrated 'Provinces' or geographical series, celebrating the wealth of Egypt. The reverse legend NILVS is inscribed in the field, identifying the personification. |
